Alisha: Top 25 Urdu Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 4: "What do you do for a living?" in Urdu. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Urdu learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the question "What do you do for a living?" In Urdu this is...
Hamza: آپ گزر بسر کے لئے کیا کرتے ہیں؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Hamza: آپ
Alisha: meaning "you" in English.
Hamza: (Slow) آپ
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Hamza: آپ
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Hamza: گزر بسر
Alisha: meaning "living"
Hamza: (Slow) گزر بسر
Alisha: Now repeat.
Hamza: گزر بسر
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Hamza: آپ گزر بسر
{Pause}

Alisha: You’ll hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "What do you do for a living?"
Hamza: .میں استاد ہوں
Alisha: "I'm a teacher." Listen as the phrase is repeated slowly. Then repeat the phrase.
Hamza: (Slow) .میں استاد ہوں
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Hamza: میں
Alisha: meaning "I"
Hamza: (slowly) میں
Alisha: Now repeat.
Hamza: میں
{Pause}
Alisha: And after that,
Hamza: استاد

Alisha: To expand on the pattern, let’s replace "teacher" with "singer." In Urdu this is
Hamza: گلوکار
Alisha: "singer"
Hamza: (slow) گلوکار (regular) گلوکار
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "singer."
Hamza: میں گلوکار ہوں۔
Alisha: We replaced "teacher" with "singer," but the phrase mostly stays the same. Now say, "I'm a singer."

Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "artist."
Hamza: میں فنکار ہوں۔

Alisha: For more practice, let’s replace "artist" with "banker."
Hamza: بینکر
Alisha: "banker"
Hamza: (slow) بینکر (regular) بینکر
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "banker."
Hamza: .میں بینکر ہوں
Alisha: Here we simply replaced "artist" with "banker." Now say, "I'm a banker."
{pause}
Hamza: .میں بینکر ہوں
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Pakistan and someone asks you what you do. You’re a teacher. Respond to the question.

Alisha: Imagine you’re a banker. How would you respond?

Alisha: You want to learn what that person does. Ask them the question.
(5 seconds)
Hamza: آپ گزر بسر کے لئے کیا کرتے ہیں؟
{pause}
Alisha: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself. Make sure to practice out loud.
Hamza: آپ گزر بسر کے لئے کیا کرتے ہیں؟
