Alisha: Top 25 Urdu Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 2: "Where are you from?" in Urdu. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Urdu learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Where are you from?" In Urdu this is...
Hamza: آپ کہاں سے ہیں؟
Alisha: The first word of the question is...
Hamza: آپ
Alisha: meaning "you" in English.
Hamza: (Slow) آپ
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Hamza: آپ
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Hamza: کہاں
Alisha: meaning "where"
Hamza: (Slow) کہاں
Alisha: Now repeat.
Hamza: کہاں
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Hamza: آپ کہاں
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...
Hamza: سے
Alisha: meaning "from"
Hamza: (Slow) سے
Alisha: Now repeat.
Hamza: سے
{Pause}

Alisha: You’ll hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Where are you from?"
Hamza: .میں امریکہ سے ہوں
Alisha: "I'm from the U.S.A." You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Hamza: (Slow) .میں امریکہ سے ہوں
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Hamza: میں
Alisha: meaning "I"
Hamza: (Slow) میں
Alisha: Now repeat.
Hamza: میں
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is...

Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "I'm from the U.S.A." and then repeat.

Alisha: Try it again, replacing "U.S.A" with "England."
Hamza: انگلینڈ
Alisha: "England"
Hamza: (slow) انگلینڈ (regular) انگلینڈ
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "England."
Hamza: میں انگلینڈ سے ہوں۔

Hamza: فرانس

Hamza: .میں پاکستان سے ہوں
Alisha: As you can hear, it’s still the same phrase. Just replace "France" with "Pakistan." Say "I'm from Pakistan."
{pause}
Hamza: .میں پاکستان سے ہوں
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Pakistan and someone asks you where you're from. You're from the U.S.A. How would you answer?
