INTRODUCTION
Alisha: Top 25 Urdu Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 13: "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" in Urdu. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Urdu learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" In Urdu this is...
Syed: کیا آپ کے کوئی بھائی یا بہن ہیں؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is...
Syed: کیا
Alisha: meaning "do" in English.
Syed: (Slow) کیا
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Syed: کیا
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Syed: آپ
Alisha: meaning "you"
Syed: (Slow) آپ
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: آپ
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Syed: کیا آپ
{Pause}
Alisha: And after that is
Syed: کے
Alisha: meaning "have"
Syed: (Slow) کے
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: کے
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Syed: کیا آپ کے
{pause}

{pause}
Alisha: And next is...

Syed: (Slow) بہن
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: بہن
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Syed: کیا آپ کے کوئی بھائی یا بہن ہیں؟
{pause}
Alisha: You’ll hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Do you have any brothers or sisters?"
Syed: میری ایک بڑی بہن ہے۔
Alisha: "I have an older sister." Listen as it’s repeated slowly. Then repeat the phrase.
Syed: (Slow) میری ایک بڑی بہن ہے۔
{pause}
Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Syed: میری
Alisha: meaning "I have"
Syed: (Slow) میری
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: میری
{Pause}
Syed: ایک بڑی بہن
Alisha: which is "an older sister"
Syed: (Slow) ایک بڑی بہن
Alisha: Now repeat.
Syed: ایک بڑی بہن
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is…
Syed: ہے
Alisha: It actually means “is”, but in this context it’s supporting the first phrase in saying “I have.”
Syed: (Slow) ہے
Alisha: And now repeat
Syed: ہے
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say "I have an older sister." and then repeat.
Syed: میری ایک بڑی بہن ہے۔
{Pause}
Alisha: To expand on the pattern, let’s replace "an older sister" with "a younger brother."
Syed: چھوٹا بھائی
Alisha: "a younger brother"
Syed: (slow) چھوٹا بھائی (regular) چھوٹا بھائی
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "a younger brother."
Syed: میرا ایک چھوٹا بھائی ہے۔
Alisha: It’s almost the same, simply replace "an older sister" with "a younger brother." Now say, "I have a younger brother."
{pause}
Syed: میرا ایک چھوٹا بھائی ہے۔
Alisha: For more practice, replace "a younger brother" with "a sister and two brothers."
Syed: ایک بہن اور دو بھائی
Alisha: "a sister and two brothers"
Syed: (slow) ایک بہن اور دو بھائی (regular) ایک بہن اور دو بھائی
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "a sister and two brothers."
Syed: میری ایک بہن اور دو بھائی ہیں۔
Alisha: Again, we just replace "a younger brother" with "a sister and two brothers." Now say, "I have a sister and two brothers."
{pause}
Syed: میری ایک بہن اور دو بھائی ہیں۔
Alisha: Now let’s replace "a sister and two brothers" with "a younger sister and an older brother."
Syed: ایک چھوٹی بہن اور ایک بڑا بھائی
Alisha: "a younger sister and an older brother"
Syed: (slow) ایک چھوٹی بہن اور ایک بڑا بھائی (regular) ایک چھوٹی بہن اور ایک بڑا بھائی
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "a younger sister and an older brother."
Syed: میری ایک چھوٹی بہن اور ایک بڑا بھائی ہے۔
Alisha: We just replace "a sister and two brothers" with "a younger sister and an older brother." Now say, "I have a younger sister and an older brother."
{pause}
Syed: میری ایک چھوٹی بہن اور ایک بڑا بھائی ہے۔
Alisha: To say "no" in a simple way, just say
Syed: نہیں ، میرے نہیں ہیں۔ میں اکلوتا بچہ ہوں۔
Alisha: This is like saying "No, I don't. I’m an only child." in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Syed: (Slowly) نہیں ، میرے نہیں ہیں۔ میں اکلوتا بچہ ہوں۔
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed.
Syed: نہیں ، میرے نہیں ہیں۔ میں اکلوتا بچہ ہوں۔
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Pakistan and someone asks you if you have any brothers or sisters. You want to say you have an older sister. How would you answer?
Syed: کیا آپ کے کوئی بھائی یا بہن ہیں؟ (five seconds) میری ایک بڑی بہن ہے۔
Alisha: Now imagine you have a younger sister and an older brother. Respond to the question.
