Now these are some big numbers, so you might want to practice them as often as you can. Let’s say you have to organize your trip with some travel agent and you are asking him about the hotels in the city. He might tell you "There are 71 hotels in this city," which in Urdu is is shehar mein ikhatar hotal moujood hain (SLOW) is shehar mein ikhatar hotal moujood hain, is shehar mein ikhatar hotal moujood hain. Let’s look at the words in this sentence. First we have is which means “here” in English. Next we have shehar mein which means “in the city,” ikhatar, as we’ve learned, is “seventy-one,” and hotal is the same as “hotel” in English. So, ikhatar hotal means “seventy-one hotels,” (SLOW) ikhatarhotal, ikhatar hotal. And last is hain, which means “is” or “are” in English. So is shehar mein ikhatar hotal moujood hain. "Here are 71 hotels in this city." |
Now if you’re booking your tickets, the travel agent might want to tell you that "You can cancel your ticket 80 days before your travel date." This in Urdu would be Aap apnay safar ki tareekh say assi din pehlay apni ticket mansookh ker saktay hain. Now that’s a big sentence, but let’s break it down and hear it one more time. (SLOW) Aap apnay safar ki tareekh say assi din pehlay apni ticket mansookh ker saktay hain, Aap apnay safar ki tareekh say assi din pehlay apni ticket mansookh ker saktay hain. In this sentence aap means “you,” the phrase apnay safar ki tareekh say means “the travel date” in English. Next we have assi which means “eighty” and Din which means “days.” So, assi Din means “eighty days,” (SLOW) assi Din, assiDin. Pehlay is the word for “before” in English. Apni ticket is “your ticket” and then we have mansookh which means “cancel.” Last we have ker saktay hain, which means “can do” or “can get it done.” So Aap apnay safar ki tareekh say assi din pehlay apni ticket mansookh ker saktay hain means "You can cancel your ticket 80 days before your travel date." |
And he might also tell you that "You have to pay a charge of 85RS." |
This in Urdu would be Aap ko pachasi dallar ki fees ada kerni ho gi, (SLOW) Aap ko pachasi RS ki fees ada kerni ho gi, Aap ko pachasi RS ki fees ada kerni ho gi. In this sentence the phrase aap ko means “you will,” paCHasi is “eighty-five,” and RS means “rupees.” So, paCHasi RS means “eighty-five rupees,” (SLOW) paCHasi RS, paCHasi RS. Next we have ki fees which means “a charge,” and last we have ada kerni ho gi which means “you will have to pay.” Aap ko pachasi RS ki fees ada kerni ho gi means "You have to pay a charge of 85RS." |
