| In the last lesson, you learned how to use the phrase acha lagna. In this lesson, you will learn how to use aanaa, which is another very common Urdu verb. Aanaa means "to come" in Urdu, and we use it a lot! So come on! Let’s get started! |
| Imagine a friend of yours is organizing a road trip and he wants to invite you. If you’re a man, he will ask kyaa Tum humare saath aa rahaa ho? And if you’re a woman, it will be kyaa Tum humare saath aa rahii ho? That means "Are you coming with us?" |
| So supposing you want to go, just answer haan, main Tumhare saath aa raha hoon if you’re a man or haan, main Tumhare saath aa rahi hoon if you’re a woman. That means "Yes, I’m coming with you!" |

| Let’s break down this answer: |
| First we have haan which is "Yes." |
| Then main, which is "I" in Urdu |
| After that we have Tumhare, which is a pronoun meaning “you” |
| Then comes saath which means “with.” Together with Tumhare, it would mean “with you.” |
| After that we have the verb aa rahaa when said by a male speaker or aa rahi when said by a female speaker. This means “am coming”. |
| Then finally, we have the verb “to be”, hoon. |

| Aanaa is often used to suggest an invitation to someone, so if you are organizing a party, for example, you can invite a female friend by asking her, kyaa Tum merii paarty mein aa rahi ho? That means "are you coming to my party?" |
| To ask a male friend, it would be kyaa Tum merii paarty mein aa rahe ho? |
| [slowly] kyaa Tum merii paarty mein aa rahi ho? |
| [slowly] kyaa Tum merii paarty mein aa rahe ho? |
| To answer this question, your female friend could say, haan, main aa rahii hoon. Your male friend, on the other hand, would say haan, main aa rahaa hoon. This means "Yes, I am coming." |

| In Urdu, aanaa is exactly the same as "to come" in English. It is a very common verb that you should be careful not to mix up with jaanaa, which only means "to go to". |
| The verb aanaa is also often used as an order. For example, you can say, mere saath aao! This means "Come with me!" |

| In this case, gender makes no difference. |
| Now it’s time for Afrah’s Advice. |
| Aanaa is a very useful word on its own. It becomes aao if you want to invite someone in but, in an informal way. If you want to make this formal, it becomes aaiye. If someone is at your doorstep and you want him or her to step inside, you simply add anDar before it. In an informal sentence it becomes anDar aao which means “Come in!” To say it more formally, you’ll want to say anDar aaiye. |
