INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to UrduPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 9 - Getting Ready for a Road Trip in Pakistan. Dana here.
Hamza: السلام علیکم. I'm Hamza.
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn about asking for advice. The conversation takes place at a car rental office.
Hamza: It's between Ali and an agent.
Dana: The speakers are strangers; therefore, they will speak formal Urdu. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Ali: Hello, is this Chohdary Car Rental? I would like to ask about renting cars.
Agent: Yes, please go ahead.
Ali: What is the process for renting cars?
Agent: It's very simple. You have to come in for registration with identity papers. There is also a first-time deposit. Then you can rent a car.
Ali: How early do you have to make a reservation?
Agent: You can always do it the day before, but then there’s a higher possibility of us not having a car available. The earlier you make your reservation, the easier it will be to get a car.
Agent: There are terms and conditions as well, which you have to sign, such as with responsibility in case of accident. When you come here then we can go through those clearly.
Agent: Yes. If you’re planning for a long trip, then you should make the reservation at least a day in advance so that we can find a driver able to go all the way and return.
Ali: Okay, and how big are the cars you have available?
Agent: We have big vehicles available. You can rent a minibus too, if you’d like, which would fit 10-12 people comfortably.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: In this dialogue, Ali was enquiring about renting a car. There was one thing the agent said that I found interesting.
Hamza: What was that?
Dana: It was the part about finding a driver.
Hamza: Oh, right! In Pakistan, when you rent a car you usually get a driver too.
Dana: So you don’t drive yourself?
Hamza: No, you don’t. It’s then your responsibility to pay for the driver’s meals and to look after him while he is driving for you.
Dana: That’s interesting. What are long road trips like in Pakistan?
Hamza: Driving is easier on road trips than in the cities, as the roads are not as congested or difficult to navigate.
Dana: Is there anything to watch out for on road trips?
Hamza: Always be on the lookout for animals wandering down the road, or the big transport trucks that use these types of roads.
Dana: Are the roads good quality?
Hamza: Not always, but the scenery and places to eat along the way are!
Dana: Okay, now onto the vocab.

Lesson focus

Dana: “What should I do in X?”

Dana: “What should I do if I get hurt?”
