Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Ali: Hello madam, this is Ali speaking. I would like to talk to you about the house. We'd like to know more in detail about the apartment house you've found. Can we talk now?
Agent: Yes. Hello, Mr. Ali, sure, let's talk now. I think this apartment will be perfect for you.
Ali: Where is it located and what kind of apartment is it?
Agent: It's in Islamabad, near the F-10 market. It's in an apartment complex, with five apartment buildings together, and around 30-40 houses in each building.
Agent: There's a market a couple of minutes out of the complex where you can get all the basic weekly shopping.
Ali: Okay, and what facilities does the complex have?
Agent: It has good security, parks, and gardens with spaces for all ages—young and old. That’s it at the moment, but they may add a gymnasium as well.
Ali: Right. When was this place built?
Agent: Only five years ago. This is an expanding, emerging area. In a few years, there will be much more around as well.
Ali: Alright. And please tell me about the house—how many rooms and what is the size?
Agent: Yes, the size is as we discussed, according to what you wanted. There is a big living-dining room, two bedrooms, a separate kitchen, and two washrooms.
Agent: There is a good balcony as well.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: So Ali is house hunting, and it sounds like the agent has a promising property for him.
Hamza: Yeah, it sounds like it might be a good fit for Ali.
Dana: What are homes in Pakistan like?
Hamza: They’re made for the climate and conditions of the regions.
Dana: What are they usually made out of?
Hamza: In most parts of the country, they’re usually made out of cement and have high ceilings with fans.
Dana: That’s good for hot summers.
Hamza: It is! Roofs are flat and open, and you can hang your washing up there.
Dana: Do people have balconies?
Hamza: Apartments do if they aren’t connected to a terrace.
Dana: I heard that most homes in Pakistan are just one story and that they stretch out.
Hamza: That’s right! In villages, houses are like small cottages and are often made out of mud, clay or straw.
Dana: And in colder areas they’re made of wood to keep the warmth inside. Okay, now onto the vocab.

Hamza: جاننا is a verb and means “to know,” and then there is چاہتے ہیں.
Dana: This means “want.” You can use this phrase when someone wants to know about something.
Hamza: You shouldn’t use this phrase for single people, only plurals. It cannot be used for feminine subjects either.
Dana: What should be used instead?
Hamza: جاننا چاہتی ہیں
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. ہم آپ کے کاروبار کے بارے میں مزید جاننا چاہتے ہیں.

Dana: Okay, what's the next word?
Hamza: ابھرتا ہوا
Dana: Meaning "emerging." You can use this phrase to talk about anything or a person that is growing.

Lesson focus

Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to inquire about housing. First, let’s look at how to talk about building structures.
Hamza: A good question you can ask is کس قسم کا/ کی
Dana: “What type of…?” So, let’s hear full examples using this question format.
Hamza: کس قسم کا گهر ہے؟
Dana: "What type of house is it?"
Hamza: کس قسم کا فلیٹ ہے؟
Dana: "What kind of apartment is it?" You can also ask similar questions if you’re renting a room.
Hamza: Yes, if you’re only going to rent, then you may have other things to ask about, such as کس قسم کی خدمات ہیں؟
Dana: “What kind of services are there?”
Hamza: Or کوڑے کے لیے کس قسم کا انتظام ہے؟
Dana: “What is the system for garbage disposal?” After asking a question like this, you might need more detailed information.
Hamza: To do this, you can use کیا کی.
Dana: This phrase has the same word repeated twice and means “what all.”
Hamza: Yes, on its own, کیا means “what.” An example sentence is گهر میں کیا کیا الیکٹرانک آلات ہیں؟
