| Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about intentions and desires. The conversation takes place in an airport. |
| Hamza: It's between a customs officer and Ali. |
| Dana: The speakers are strangers; therefore, they will speak formal Urdu. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

| علی: جی |
| کسٹم آفیسر: آپ کا پاکستان کے سفر کا مقصد کیا ہے؟ |
| علی: میں یہاں اپنے دوست کی شادی میں شرکت کے لئے، دوستوں سے ملنے کے لئے آیا ہوں. |
| کسٹم آفیسر: اس کے علاوہ، آپ یہاں کیا کریں گے؟ |
| علی: اس کے علاوہ میں کچھ دوستوں کے ساتھ مری اور گلگت میں سیاحت اور سفر کروں گا. |

| Ali: I'm here to attend my friend's wedding and to meet with friends. |
| Customs Officer: Other than that, what will you be doing here? |
| Ali: Other than that I will be sightseeing and traveling in Murree and Gilgit with some friends. |
| Customs Officer: Have you booked places where you will be staying and decided where you'll go? |
| Ali: Yes, we'll be traveling by car and trains. I have friends here who have made plans. We'll mostly stay in small hotels and lodges, and then in Murree, we'll stay in a houseboat. I have the details of hotels listed here. |
| Customs Officer: You've been to Pakistan before right? |
| Ali: Yes, many years ago, I had visited with my parents as a child. |

| Dana: So Ali has come to Pakistan for a wedding. |
| Hamza: Yes, weddings are a very important celebration for Pakistani people. |
| Dana: Can you tell us a little about Pakistani weddings? |
| Hamza: Sure! There are fancy clothes for the bride and the day is enjoyed to the fullest. |
| Dana: How about the food? The best part about weddings, for the guests at least, is the food! |
| Hamza: Of course the food is fantastic! A lot of money is spent on food and residences for the guests. |

| Hamza: Relatives, both immediate and extended, and also friends, of course. |
| Dana: Like Ali. Are friendships considered important in Pakistan? |
| Hamza: Yes, they are. They can help you enjoy life and help you through difficult times. |

| Dana: Meaning "what is the purpose." This phrase consists of three words. The first word means “purpose” and is; |
| Hamza: مقصد. The second word is the question marker کیا, which means “what.” The last word is ہے |
| Dana: This is a particle that means “is.” |
| Hamza: You can use this phrase to ask about the purpose of something. |
| Dana: It’s usually used with verbs or nouns. |

| Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. آپ کے مطالعے کا مقصد کیا ہے؟ |

| Hamza: You can use this when you go shopping and want to see an item before buying it. |

| Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. وه سوٹ دکھا ئیں. |
| Dana: .. which means "Please show that suit.” |

| Hamza: Yes, he did. We can talk about what we have come to do by using کرنے آیا ہوں . |
| Dana: This means “have come to do.” This is useful for stating specific intentions or goals. |
| Hamza: If the speaker is female, آیا changes to آئی |
| Dana: Can you break down this phrase for us? |
| Hamza: Kernay is from the transitive verb کرنا kerna, meaning “to do”. آیا ہوں aya hun means “have come.” |
| Dana: Let’s hear an example sentence. |
| Hamza: میں یہاں کمپنی کے صدر سے ملاقات کرنے آیا ہوں |
| Dana: “I am here to meet the president of the company.” |
| Hamza: The next phrase is colloquial. It is کرنا |
| Dana: which means “have to do.” You use this with tasks that are obligations - either obligations you have set yourself, or other people have set for you. |
| Hamza: The pronouns have to be in their oblique forms, and the verb conjugation has to match the task, not the speaker. For example, مجهے یہ خط پوسٹ کرنا ہے |
| Dana: “I have to post this letter.” Let’s hear one more example. |
| Hamza: ہمیں دکان بند کرنی ہے |
| Dana: “We have to close the shop.” Next, let’s look at how to express a desire to do something. |
| Hamza: You can use کرنا چاہتا ہوں |
| Dana: This expression is used for expressing “I want to do [something].” You use this for things you want to do, but not things you have specifically planned to do. Hamza, can you give us an example? |
| Hamza: میں وہاں دوباره ضرور جانا چاہتا ہوں |
| Dana: “I definitely want to go there again.” |
| Hamza: The next expression is کرنا چاہوں گا |
| Dana: It is used for expressing “I would like to do [something]” You use this to talk about things you specifically want to do in the future, or when discussing things you would hypothetically like to do. |
| Hamza: For example, میں اگلے ہفتے تک منصوبہ مکمل کرنا چاہوں گا |
| Dana: "I'd like to complete the project plans by next week." |
| Hamza: Another example is میں یہاں دوباره ضرور آنا چاہوں گا |
| Dana: "I'd definitely like to come here again." |
| Hamza: The last phrase for this lesson is کروں گا. |
| Dana: “I will do [something].” If you’re asked about what you’re doing, this is the phrase you can use to respond directly. Let’s end this lesson with an example of this. |
