INTRODUCTION |
Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to UrduPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 20 - Is Your Pakistani Train Delayed? Dana Here. |
Hamza: السلام علیکم (Assalam u alaikum) I'm Hamza. |
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll review directions. The conversation takes place at a railway station. |
Hamza: It's between Ali and Umer. They are listening to an announcement. |
Dana: The speakers are acquaintances; therefore, they will speak formal Urdu. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
Announcement: All passengers, may I have your attention, please. Train number 332 Lahore-Karachi Express, traveling from Lahore to Karachi, is delayed due to waterlogging. |
Announcement: Number 332 Lahore-Karachi Express, scheduled to arrive at 1600 hours, is delayed by one hour and will arrive at 1700 hours on Platform number 13. |
Announcement: We deeply regret any inconvenience caused by this. |
Ali: They're talking about our train. It's arriving an hour late. |
Umer: Our train will be late? I didn't listen to the announcement properly. What did it say? |
Ali: It said that there has been waterlogging on the way, so the Lahore-Karachi Express is running an hour late. |
Umer: If there is waterlogging on the route, then maybe there will be a delay in departing too? |
Ali: Who knows. Instead of waiting around for an hour, let's go and grab a bite. |
Umer: What about the luggage? |
Ali: We'll have to take it with us. There are places to eat nearby, inside the station. Let's go there. |
Umer: Okay, let's go. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Dana: What is it like to take a train in Pakistan? |
Hamza: Well, most train stations are old and not very big. |
Dana: How old are they? |
Hamza: Most were built before the independence of Pakistan in 1947. |
Dana: Wow, that is old! Is work being done to modernize the train system? |
Hamza: Yes, some new trains have been introduced, and there are also train stations being restructured and new technology put in place for the ticketing system. |
Dana: Are the amenities like those in train stations? |
Hamza: There are food stalls that sell different types of foods, snacks and drinks. |
Dana: Are there any bigger food chains? |
Hamza: In the big cities, you might find something like McDonald’s there. One good thing about Pakistani train stations is the station workers. |
Dana: What makes them so good? |
Hamza: Well, for a small fee they will carry your luggage for you. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Dana: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Hamza: کے باعث |
Dana: Meaning "due to, because of." |
Dana: This phrase can be used in cause and effect sentences. |
Hamza: First, explain the cause. Then, the consequence. |
Dana: This phrase is used in formal situations. In informal situations we would instead say: |
Hamza: کی وجہ سے |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. مجھے ٹریفک کے باعث دیر ہو گئی. |
Dana: ..which means “I am late because of the traffic.” |
Dana: Okay, what's the next word? |
Hamza: انتظار کرنے کی بجائے |
Dana: Meaning "instead of waiting." |
Dana: This phrase consists of three words. The first word, meaning “wait”, is; |
Hamza: انتظار. The second word is the verb کرنا, meaning “to do.” Last is کی بجائے |
Dana: This means “instead of.” |
Hamza: You can replace the first word انتظار with other verbs. |
Dana: So instead of “instead of waiting,” you could say “instead of working” |
Hamza: Yes, that’s کام کرنے کی بجائے |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. یہاں انتظار کرنے کی بجائے، آئس کریم کھانے چلتے ہیں. |
Dana: .. which means “Instead of waiting here, let's eat ice cream.” |
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
