INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to UrduPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 18 - Fixing What's Broken in Pakistan. Dana Here.
Hamza: السلام علیکم (Assalam u alaikum). I'm Hamza.
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about fixing things. The conversation takes place in an electronics shop.
Hamza: It's between a salesman and Ali.
Dana: The speakers are strangers; therefore, they will speak formal Urdu. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
سیلزمین: ہیلو، میں آپ کی کیا مدد کر سکتا ہوں؟
علی: ہیلو. میں نے گزشتہ ہفتے یہاں سے برقی مکسر خریدا تھا. یہ کام نہیں کر رہا.
سیلزمین: آپ نے یہ یہاں سے خریدا تها؟ آپ کے ساتھ رسید ضرور ہو گی.
علی: ہاں یہ ہے. پہلی بار استعمال کے بعد سے یہ کام نہیں کر رہا ہے.
سیلزمین: اس نے پہلی بار کام کیا تها؟
علی: جی ہاں میں نے تقریبا 5 منٹ کے لئے، ایک وقت اس کا استعمال کیا.
سیلزمین: ٹھیک ہے. اور اس نے کس طرح کام کرنا بند کر دیا؟
علی: یہ کل سے کام نہیں کر رہا. اس ایک وقت کے بعد، یہ بالکل چالو نہیں ہو رہا ہے. ہم نے تب سے کچھ مختلف نہیں کیا ہے.
علی: کیا آپ براہ مہربانی دیکھ سکتے ہیں کہ کیا مسئلہ ہے، اور اس نے کام کرنا کیوں چهوڑ دیا؟

Salesman: Hello, how may I help you?
Ali: Hello. I had bought this electric hand mixer from here last week. It's not working.
Salesman: You bought this here? You must have the receipt with you.
Ali: Yes, here it is. It has not worked since its first use.
Salesman: It worked the first time?
Ali: Yes, I used it one time for about 5 minutes.
Salesman: Okay. And how did it stop working?
Ali: It hasn’t been working since yesterday. After that one time, it's not turning on at all. We haven't done anything different since.
Ali: Can you please see what the problem is, and why it stopped working?
Salesman: Yes, of course. It’s clearly not working. Can you leave it with us so we can take a look at what's wrong with it?
Ali: I need it today. Can it not be fixed now?
Salesman: Okay, what we can do is we'll exchange this for another machine for you. Your warranty card is right here in the box, so we can exchange this right now.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: It’s a shame that the mixer didn’t work for Ali, but I think he received some good customer service there.
Hamza: I think so too.
Dana: Is it easy to get things repaired in Pakistan?
Hamza: Yes, it is. You can find repairmen on every corner in residential areas, and also in marketplaces.
Dana: Are these proper stores, or just makeshift ones?
Hamza: They can be either.
Dana: What kind of things can you get fixed?
Hamza: Shoes, clothes, electrical goods and so on. The repairs are cheap and quick.
Dana: It sounds like they’re good value for money.
Hamza: Yes, some proper stores will hire the repairmen to work for them, for example, as tailors.
Dana: And you always have the option of taking faulty goods back to the store, like Ali did.
Hamza: Yes, you do. But if you’re out of warranty, you can take them to a repairman instead.
Dana: Okay, now onto the vocab.

Hamza: کس طرح
Dana: Meaning “how did.”
Dana: You can use this to ask how something happened.
Hamza: You can also use it to ask about how something works, or looks and so on.
Dana: Is this used with masculine or feminine things?
Hamza: You can use it with both.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. آپ کی ہڈی کس طرح ٹوٹی؟
Dana: .. which means “How did you break your bone?”
Dana: Okay, what's the next word?
Hamza: ضرورت ہونا
Dana: Meaning “need, needed.”
Dana: You can use this to indicate the need of something.
Hamza: It can be used with masculine and feminine things.
Dana: You use this with a strong need.
Hamza: Yes, if it isn’t a strong and intense need, you can use چاہیے instead.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Hamza: Sure. For example, you can say.. آپ کی مدد کی ضرورت ہے.
Dana: .. which means “Your help is needed.”
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about fixing things. How can we ask someone to fix something?
Hamza: The basic question is کیا آپ ایکس کو ٹھیک کر سکتے ہیں؟
Dana: “Can you fix X?” or “Can you please help fix X?” You can use that sentence for either of those meanings.
Hamza: All you need to do is switch X for what you need to be fixed. For example, you can use پنکها
Dana: This means “fan.” Let’s hear how to say “Can you fix the fan?” or “Can you please help fix the fan?”
Hamza: کیا آپ پنکهے کو ٹھیک کر سکتے ہیں؟
Dana: This is the polite level. How do we say this in the familiar level?
Hamza: کیا تم پنکهے کو ٹھیک کر سکتے ہو؟. Another sentence we can use is کیا آپ ایکس کو ٹھیک کر پائیں گے؟
Dana: “Will you be able to fix X?”
Hamza: Or کیا آپ ایکس کی مرمت کر سکتے ہیں؟
Dana: “Can you repair X?”
Hamza: We use مرمت, meaning “repair,” for broken and spoiled things, but not for things such as rips in clothes.
Dana: Now, let’s look at how to describe problems.
Hamza: Important words to remember are the negative forms of چلنا and کام کرنا
Dana: They both mean “to run” or “to work.”
Hamza: So we can say یہ چل نہیں رہا ہے or یہ کام نہیں کر رہا ہے
Dana: They both mean “It is not working.” Other useful words include:
Hamza: بند
Dana: “stopped”
Hamza: یہ بند ہو گیا ہے
Dana: “This has stopped working.”
Hamza: ٹوٹنا
Dana: “to break”
Hamza: یہ ٹوٹ گیا ہے
Dana: “X has broken” or “This is broken.”
Hamza: اٹکنا
Dana: “to get stuck”
Hamza: یہ اٹک گیا ہے
Dana: “This has gotten stuck” or “It is stuck.”
