Son: Look at that. I'm running so late again! Mom, why didn't you wake me up earlier?
Woman: I called out to you many times. You had gotten up too, but then you must have gone back to sleep.
Son: Aah, it'll be difficult catching a bus at this time too!
Woman: I'll ask your father. He can drop you off quickly on his bike this time.
Son: Dad's able to drop me off today?
Woman: Yes, he is at home, so he'll be able to drop you off this time. Take a bus on the way back.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: I think that is a common conversation that parents and children have!
Hamza: Yeah, I was never very good at getting up in the morning either!
Becky: Luckily, the son has an option to get to where he needs to, even if it is just his father’s bike.
Hamza: Yeah, he’s lucky! It depends on where he lives, but traffic can be crazy in Pakistan.
Becky: Where’s the worst traffic?
Hamza: Karachi is the biggest city, and also the worst for traffic. Roads are packed during rush hour, and if traffic gets backed up, it can take hours to get started again.
Becky: Lahore is a big city too. Is it bad there as well?
Hamza: Yeah, rush hour is crazy there too. In these big cities, drivers often run red lights and speed.
Becky: Are the pollution levels high?
Hamza: They can be. Thankfully, the capital, Islamabad, has the most organized traffic system and there is less pollution there.
Becky: So, if I understand correctly, traffic in Islamabad isn’t so bad, but in other cities it’s crazy?
Hamza: That’s about right. I would advise hiring a local driver to help you get around, as they know the roads and how to drive on them.
Becky: Okay, now onto the vocab.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn about how to use "so much" in exclamations. First off, what is “so much” in Urdu?
Hamza: It is اتنی.
Becky: We can use this to describe either the intensity of weather or the quality of a thing.
Hamza: That’s right. اتنی is used for feminine weather or things, and اتنا is used for masculine weather and things.
Becky: Can you give us some examples?
Hamza: Sure! First, I’ll give you some feminine examples.
Becky: Sounds good!
Hamza: اتنی گرمی نہیں ہے
Becky: “It’s not so hot.”
Hamza: گاڑی اتنی ٹهنڈی ہے!
Becky: “The car is so cold!” Now for some masculine sentences.
Hamza: موسم اتنا گرم نہیں ہے
Becky: “The weather is not so hot.”
Hamza: یہ کیک اتنا مزیدار نہیں ہے.
Becky: “The cake is not so tasty.” Next, let’s look at how we can express sadness in Urdu.
Hamza: There are several ways to do this. You can use exclamations like ارے and اوه.
Becky: These both mean “oh.” You can also use proper words.
Hamza: Yes, افسوس means “sorry”, and اداسی means “sadness,” for example.
Becky: Let’s hear some sentences.
Hamza: اوہ یہ کیسے ہوا؟
Becky: “Oh, how did this happen?”
Hamza: مجھے نقصان پر افسوس ہے.
Becky: “I am sorry for the loss.”
Hamza: یہ اداسی دور ہو جائے گی
Becky: “This sadness will go away.”

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
