| Assalamualaikum. Welcome to another episode of Urdu top words and I am your host Afrah. Our today’s lesson would be Top 10 Phrases to Know When You’re Having a Baby. Let’s get started. |

| دودھ پلانا |
| (dudh pilana) |
| "to breastfeed" |
| وہ دودھ پلا رہی ہے. |
| (Woh dudh pila rahi ha.) |
| "She is breastfeeding." |
| We, I mean in our country, lots of women breastfeed their kids and for a number of years. It can be from one year to three years in terms of period but unfortunately we don’t have lots of nursing areas in shopping malls or in restaurants. So basically the women are always covering themselves with a big cloth and that’s how they are doing it in public and now I think there is kind of a change that at least in the expensive restaurants I would say that they have certain place where you can breastfeed your baby and there is one more thing that I’ve observed in the younger generation that they tend to – that the women are also breastfeeding but at the same time, they tend to start giving the bottles at very early age. That is to have an alternative that when they are going outside especially to a restaurant or to a family gathering somewhere, so they can always give the bottle instead of breastfeed. |

| Well guys, I actually know how to change a diaper because I have eight siblings, yes. I am the oldest one. So I got to change lots of diapers when I was in high school or let’s say... |
| So yeah, don’t be shocked by it because Pakistani people do tend to have many children. It’s not a big number to some people. It’s okay. |

| لباس بدلنا |

| بچے کا لباس بدلیں. |
| (Bacha ka libas badlein.) |
| "Change the child's clothes. " |
| I think it’s a good one on the list. So try to remember it. |

| ایک لوری گانا |
| (Aik lori gana) |
| "to sing a lullaby" |
| مجهے اپنے بیٹے کے لیے لوری گانا پسند ہے. |
| (Mujhay apnay baitay ky liye lori gana pasand hai.) |
| "I like to sing a lullaby to my son." |
| I think it’s pretty common in Pakistani mothers. We have some of our traditional lullabies and I think every mother knows it because we’ve been hearing it from a very, very old time. There is one allah, allah, allah allah lori doodh ki katori and I think it’s quite famous and I think most of the mothers would know it. |

| "to take a nap" |
| دوپہر میں تھوڑی دیر قیلولہ کرنا صحت کے لئے اچھا ہے. |
| (Dopehar mei thori dair keloola kerna sehat ky liye acha hai.) |
| "Taking a nap in the afternoon is good for one's health." |
| Well, I completely agree with it guys and I remember when I was – I mean until my college, it was a routine of mine and especially in my school, we used to come home and my mother would always put us down for a nap for an hour at least and we would still be energetic until 9 PM or so and it’s really good. You should try it. |

| "to buy a car seat" |
| میں ایک کار کی سیٹ خریدنا چاہتا ہوں. |
| (Mein aik car ki seat khareedna chahta hun.) |
| "I want to buy a car seat." |
| Just for the information guys. The cars in Pakistan, the ones assembled in Pakistan, they don’t have seatbelts for the backseats. So, if you have a baby and you want a car seat, you would have to go to a workshop and get the holes in the body so when you buy the car seat, it is easy for you to fix. And this is something that you would have to do it on your own. To be honest, I was actually quite surprised when I had to buy a car seat for my nephew and when my sister told me that they don’t have a car, I mean they don’t have seatbelts, I was, like, really shocked that how can they do it. But yeah, I mean this is my information and I looked it up on the internet. So many people actually did it like they did like, do it yourself solutions for fixing a car seat in cars assembled in Pakistan or made in Pakistan. |

| بجے کے جهولے کو دهکا لگانا. |
| (bachay ky jhoolay ko dhaka lagana) |
| "to push a stroller" |
| کیا آپ بجے کے جهولے کو دهکا لگا سکتے ہیں. |
| (Kia aap bachay ky jhoolay ko dhaka laga saktay hain?) |
| "Can you push the stroller?" |
| So guys I know I gave the translation as bachay ky jhoolay ko like stroller, jhoola but to be honest, the Urdu language has absorbed many words from the English language. So we just say it as stroller but we don’t say it bachay ky jhoolay ko dhaka laga saktay hain? Because when you say bachay ky jhoolay ko Dhaka lagana, the thing that comes to our mind is a swing, you know or a kind of a ride that the child has in a park but if you want to talk about the stroller, it is best within conversation, you just use the word stroller. So the sentence would be Kia aap bachay ky jhoolay ko dhaka laga saktay hain? So just replace the word jhoola or jhoolay with stroller. |

| "to read a book" |
| کتاب پڑھنا اچهی عادت ہے. |
| (Kitab perhna achi adat hai.) |
| "It is a good habit to read books." |
| So surprisingly I don’t see many campaigns for women or men when they are expecting a baby to read books about it or about the development of their child and how the families will change and how it will impact them. That would be because I think we are still now living in a joint family system. So always our parents are with us to guide us which is actually a big advantage but I think the younger generation is now starting to get a bit more awareness about this method like reading by themselves and trying to understand the natural process of birth and what’s going to happen to the body and what to do at what time. But yes, a big support is our family. So the majority of people in Pakistan, they don’t read books. Rather, they have their mother and father and father-in-law and mother-in-law there to support them and teach them along the way and pass on their experience. |

| "Can you bathe the child?" |
| Well, I guess again it’s one of the pros of living in a joint family system that when the baby arrives, you don’t have to take care of the baby right away because you are surrounded by family members especially your mother, your mother-in-law, your sister, your sister-in-law. These are I think big help in your family and big support to you that whenever you have a child, they are just there for you. They teach you everything they know and this is how I think our society has been doing for a long time and yes, I do acknowledge that we have some working women in our society but still the family support is there and I feel it’s one of the blessings of living in a joint family system. |

| بچے کی خوراک بنانا |
| (bachay ki khorak banana) |
| "to make baby food" |
| میں بچے کی خوراک بنا رہی ہوں. |
| (Mei bachay ki khorak bana rahi hun.) |
| "I am making the baby's food." |
| Guys, you should note over here in the sentence structure, the word khorak basically is the translation of food. So it does not cover usually any liquid stuff you know like milk or some shakes or something. So it’s usually solid food and we use in Urdu the word khorak for solid foods. Baby food smells nasty. |
