Alisha: Welcome to 3-Minute Urdu, Lesson 8 - Talking About Your Age. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask someone's age and to say yours in Urdu.

Alisha: Here's the formal way to ask 'How old are you?' in Urdu.
Syed: [Normal] آپ کتنے سال کے ہیں؟ (Aap kitnay saal kay hain?)
Alisha: First is the formal word meaning 'you'
Syed: [Normal] آپ [Slow] آپ (aap)
Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'how many'
Syed: [Normal] کتنے [Slow] کتنے (kitnay)
Alisha: Next is the phrase meaning 'years old'
Syed: [Normal] سال کے [Slow] سال کے (saal kay)
Alisha: Last is the word meaning 'are'
Syed: [Normal] ہیں [Slow] ہیں (hain)
Alisha: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the formal question meaning 'How old are you?'
Syed: [Slow] آپ کتنے سال کے ہیں؟ [Normal] آپ کتنے سال کے ہیں؟
Alisha: Now, imagine you're speaking to a friend. Here's the informal way to ask, 'How old are you?'
Syed: [Normal] تم کتنے سال کے ہو؟ (Tum kitnay saal kay ho?)

Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'how many'
