Alisha: Welcome to 3-Minute Urdu, Lesson 17 - Why? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and answer why in Urdu.
Body
Alisha: Here's the formal way to ask 'Why are you late?' in Urdu, when speaking to a woman.
Syed: [Normal] آپ دیر سے کیوں آئے ہیں؟ (Aap der say kyun aaye hain?)
Alisha: First is the formal word meaning 'you'
Syed: [Normal] آپ [Slow] آپ (aap)
Alisha: Next is the phrase meaning 'late'
Syed: [Normal] دیر سے [Slow] دیر سے (der say)
Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'why'
Syed: [Normal] کیوں [Slow] کیوں (kyun)
Alisha: Last is the phrase meaning 'are you'
Syed: [Normal] آئے ہیں [Slow] آئے ہیں (aaye hain)
Alisha: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning 'Why are you late?'
Syed: [Slow] آپ دیر سے کیوں آئے ہیں؟ [Normal] آپ دیر سے کیوں آئے ہیں؟
Alisha: Here's a response meaning 'Because I missed the train' for a female speaker.
Syed: [Normal] کیونکہ میری ٹرین چھوٹ گئی۔ (Kyun kai meri train choot gai.)
Alisha: First is a phrase meaning 'because'
Syed: [Normal] کیونکہ [Slow] کیونکہ (kyun kay)
Alisha: Next is the word meaning 'my'
Syed: [Normal] میری [Slow] میری (meri)
Alisha: After this is the word meaning 'train'
Syed: [Normal] ٹرین [Slow] ٹرین (train)

Alisha: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight. When asking about 'why' questions in Urdu, it is recommended to keep your tone polite and respectful. Otherwise, it may be taken as a token of insolence and disputes may arise. Also, remember that asking questions about certain socio-cultural matters is considered taboo.
